It is enticing on the nose with raspberry, red apple, rockmelon and citrus aromas, leading to a beautifully weighted palate that is juicy and vibrant. The wine offers delicate fruit intensity and finesse, wonderfully complemented by fine texture and bright acidity, finishing lingering and crisp. Charming and delightfully dry.

At its best: now to 2019.

This is gently expressed on the nose showing dark plum, cherry, dried herb and warm spice aromas with a hint of dried herb notes. The palate is juicy and nicely rounded, and delivers elegant fruit weight and smooth texture, well framed by fine tannins. Attractively fruited and very easy on the palate.

Tironui Estate 2013

From an elevated site at Taradale, this single-vineyard red has good personality. The 2013 vintage (4.5*) is a blend of Malbec (67 per cent), Merlot (28 per cent) and ‘Cabernet’ (5 per cent). Hand-harvested and co-fermented, it was matured for 20 months in French oak barrels (two and three year-old.) Richly scented, with plum and dark chocolate aromas, it is mouthfilling, with rich blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, fresh, vibrant, supple and harmonious. An excellent example of a ‘fruit-driven’ style, it should be at its best 2017+.

From an elevated site at Taradale, this single-vineyard red has strong personality. The 2014 vintage (4.5*) is a blend of Malbec (66 per cent), Merlot (25 per cent) and ‘Cabernet’ (9 per cent). Matured for a year in French oak barrels (20% new), it is densely coloured, with a youthful, plummy, spicy bouquet. Full-bodied and fruit-packed, it is concentrated and finely textured, with fresh, ripe flavours, well-integrated oak, fine-grained tannins, and excellent balance, richness and flow. Drink now or cellar.

Tironui Estate 2013

Deep, dense and chewy red with dark berry, plum, spice anise and smoky oak flavours. The spicy, rustic Malbec flavours dominate, unsurprising as the variety represents two-thirds of the blend. Impressively ripe but a little closed at this stage – the wine needs time to show its best.


Malbec/Merlot/Cabernet 2014

Deep, dark red with a dense and slightly peppery texture. Dark berry, liquorice, cassis and spicy oak. Powerful red with potential – it offers value at this price.

A blend of 52%  Malbec, 32% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, hand-picked and fermented to 13% alc., the wine aged at least 10 months in two to three year old french barrels. Very full,dark, purple-hued black-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly proportioned with good concentration and density, showing aromas of spicy black berry fruits and plums underlined by some eucalypt, mint, dark herbs and dusty cedary oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate is firmly constructed with dry textures.

Flavours of plums and liquorice sit alongside eucalypt and mint and are carried by fine-grained tannins and spicy oak. The acidity is soft, but this has good enough depth and drive, and the flavours lead to a dry,grainy finish with lingering dusty oak and spiced plum flavours. This is a firm, dry textured, Merlot-based red, with plum, liquorice and cedary oak flavours. Match with roasted game and hard cheeses over the next 5-7 years.

Dark, deep, black-red colour with garnet hues on rim. The bouquet is restrained, but shows good depth and presence, with savoury, earthy black plum and red berry fruits entwined with earth elements, spices and oak cedar. This is Malbec expressive on nose, medium full-bodied, deep flavours of blackcurrants and herb-infused dark plums are the feature of the palate.

Cabernet-Sauvignon is upfront. the mouthfeel is softly textured with a tight, fine-grained tannin core and structure, supporting and balancing the fruit. Lifted, spicy oak notes add to the depth of flavour and the wine flows with good drive to a well packed, lingering finish, with plum, earth and spice notes.

This is a softly concentrated malbec and cabernet blend with a fine-grained core and spicy,earthy,plum flavours. Match with slow cooked game meat dishes over the next 5-6 years. a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cab Sav, co-fermented to 14% alc., the wine aged over 12 months in new oak. Only 125 dozen made RRP NZD $35.00

Full, deep, near saturated black-red colour, youthful in appearance.  This has a full nose with ripe fruit aromas of dark red and black plums harmoniously melded with subtle earth and spice notes and a little nutty, resinous oak.  This is soft and even in presentation, the fruit gently fulling the bouquet.

Medium-full bodied, the palate features gently mouthfilling flavours of sweetly ripe black berried and plum fruits complexed by soft earth, spice and nutty oak nuances.  Ripe tannins support the fruit and grow in presence to provide plenty of mouthfeel, texture and grip.  The acidity is soft and integral, allowing the structure to carry the wine to a long finish of spiced black fruits.

This is a mouthfilling, ripe, black-berry and spicy plum fruited Malbec blend with plenty of grip and structure.  Serve with game meat and casseroles over the next 7-9+ years.  A blend of 67% Malbec, 28% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit hand-picked and co-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 20 months in 2-3 y.o. Near impenetrable black-hued red colour with youthful purple hues on the rim.  This has an elegantly concentrated, firm nose with bright and vibrant, fragrant, dark red berry and blackcurrant fruit aromas, with subtly lifted oak notes.

Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours of dark red berry fruit and blackcurrants are interwoven with dark herbs and spices, and form an elegantly proportioned, but firmly concentrated core.  The fruit and mouthfeel is enlivened by bright acidity, and refined tannins provide structure, grip and linearity.

This has excellent energy and drive carrying the wine to a long, lingering finish of spicy blackcurrant fruit and herbs.  This is a finely structured, vibrant black-fruited Malbec blend with freshness and elegance.  Match with beef, lamb, venison and semi-hard cheeses over the next 6-8 years.

*****  Stars         Tironui Estate Hawke’s Bay Rosé 2017

Very pale cerise-pink, lighter on the rim.  The nose is very fresh, elegant and fragrant with aromas of strawberries, quince and red florals and subtle notes of fruit pastille confectionary and minerals.  This has beauty and delicacy.  Dry to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate has elegant and aromatic flavours of strawberries, quince and watermelon, with red floral notes and mouthwatering mineral elements.

The mouthfeel is refreshing and lively with bright, crisp acidity, and the wine flows along a very fine-textured line with a little thirst-quenching grip, leading to a dry, subtly-nuanced finish.  This is a delightfully elegant and delicately fruited dry rosé with strawberry, quince and watermelon flavours and thirst-quenching mineral notes.

Serve as an aperitif and with canapes over the next 2 years.  A blend of 73% Malbec, 19% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, hand-picked, WBP and co-fermented to 11.5% alc. and approx. 5 g/L RS.  280 dozen made.  18.5/20  Sep 2017  RP $25.00
